The Next Stage Capital Campaign

Diana Wortham Theatre is a beloved asset and resource for our community, hosting 200 public events with attendance exceeding 55,000 each year.

Thanks to corporate and individual donations, The Next Stage Capital Campaign successfully raised $3.1M in support of the transformation of Diana Wortham Theatre into the Wortham Center for the Performing Arts .

The Henry LaBrun Studio, a new classroom and performance space, is now under construction, in the north wing of the expanded lobby. The lobby will also receive new flooring and furniture, as well as an upgraded concessions area. Architectural rendering courtesy of Clark Nexsen.

In January 2019, construction began at the current Diana Wortham Theatre — transforming the single-stage entity into a three-venue performing arts complex. Active day and night, the new Wortham Center for the Performing Arts will bring artists, students and audiences together to experience, learn and celebrate through performance. The Wortham Center will open in September 2019, with a grand opening celebration to coincide with the beginning of Diana Wortham Theatre's 2019/2020 Mainstage Season. The Diana Wortham Theatre will remain open throughout the construction.

The new Wortham Center for the Performing Arts will comprise three distinct venues:

The new Tina McGuire Theatre:
  • A multi-use black box theatre
  • Seats 80-100
  • Comfortable seating with convertible configuration options
The new Henry LaBrun Studio:
  • A multi-use space for classes and events
  • Seats 60-80
  • Classroom, workshop or performance venue
The existing 500-seat Diana Wortham Theatre:
  • Refurbished throughout
  • Improved sound system with hearing assistance technology
  • Energy efficient LED lighting
Additional construction projects:
  • The construction of new offices to house the theatre's growing staff
  • An upgraded lobby with expanded seating
  • A new concessions area
  • A new coat check
  • Ticketing upgrade with online and mobile access

"The Diana Wortham Theatre offers high quality performances in an intimate setting. The addition of a black box theatre and studio performance space are natural extensions of the Theatre’s existing sweet spot!"  –Major Donor to the Capital Campaign

You are invited to join us!
Thanks to our amazing donors, The Next Stage has successfully drawn to a close. A full list of contributors to the Capital Campaign can be found in the 2018/2019 Mainstage Series playbill. When construction is complete, supporters will be recognized on a donor wall in the new lobby.

Together with your support, the Wortham Center for the Performing Arts will
energize performing arts in Asheville by offering two new venues, improving the main Diana Wortham Theatre, and enhancing patron services. It's not too late to partake in the dream. Additional contributions will address expanded needs and services in the new space. Please consider investing in The Next Stage campaign.
