8:00 pm

Asheville's Terpsicorps Theatre of Dance, known for its innovative multimedia collaborations and world class dancers, is busily preparing for its sixth summer of new work in the mountains of North Carolina.

In an art form traditionally run by men and populated primarily by women, artistic director Heather Maloy is turning dance on its ear.  The company has decided to use their June show, Elvis & other MEN, to celebrate the dynamic power of the male dancer.

Nine men from companies such as Pittsburgh Ballet, Balletmet, Nashville Ballet and North Carolina Dance Theatre will be coming together to perform a repertoire free of women.

The evening will pay homage to men, in all their forms…

Every Man – Salvatore Aiello’s critically acclaimed masterpiece “Journey” uses a corps of nine men to show the voyage of man as he progresses through the many phases of life.

The Performer - “Elvis has Left the Building” takes an alternately campy and thought-provoking look at the trappings of celebrity.

The Business Man - “Run Ragged” takes a comedic look at the day to day competition and stress of the workplace.

The Working Man“Train” is inspired by the strength and determination of the men who truly embody the term ‘worker’ with their bodies, hearts, and souls.

The Young Man“Ugly” uses the music of the Violent Femmes to portray the good, the bad, and the ugly of youth.  The music will be performed live by Asheville’s own Holiday Childress of the Goodies, pairing up with the ladies of Ménage to put their own spin on the classic tunes.

First Annual Opening Night Gala Event!

Thursday, June 26

7:00 pm - 11:30 pm

Every major dance company celebrates the opening of their new season with a gala, and Terpsicorps is no exception.  The First Annual Opening Night Gala Event begins with a pre-show talk in the Forum by artistic director Heather Maloy, who will share her insight into this season’s repertoire.  Then, Gala guests will watch “Elvis & other men” in a preferred seating section in the center orchestra.  Guests will also have the opportunity to enjoy champagne with the artistic staff during intermission.

Following the show, guests and the Terpsicorps dancers will head over to the Flying Frog Café (located below The Frog Bar) for an opening night reception befitting a world class dance company like Terpsicorps.  The reception will include heavy h’ordevers, champagne, and a cash bar.  Don’t miss the premiere of Asheville’s newest tradition!

Tickets are $75 (includes price of admission and $25 of the ticket price is a tax-deductible donation) and can be purchased through the box office at 828-257-4530.

What is  Terpsicorps?

Terpsichore
- The art of dancing / In Greek mythology,  the muse of dance
Corps - The human body / A body of persons acting  together

In June of 2003,  Terpsicorps Theatre of Dance became Asheville’s premiere contemporary ballet  company, winning praise from critics and theatergoers alike.  Every summer, Terpsicorps hand picks a unique group of critically acclaimed dancers  from the rosters of such well respected dance companies as Pittsburgh Ballet,  BalletMet, American Repertory Ballet, Kansas City Ballet, NC Dance Theatre and  the Nashville Ballet during their main company’s summer lay-off time.

Utilizing the term “theatre” in Terpsicorps Theatre of Dance  indicates that we strive to make your evening with us an all encompassing  performance event filled with dance, drama, music and visual art.

What the Asheville Citizen-Times has to say about Terpsicorps…

“dance at its best...  high budget shows have nothing on the level of stimulus and reward offered by  Terpsicorps.”

“Coupling color and light, movement and style, music and  animation, form and texture, projections and good story material, Terpsicorps  tells the material in a manner rarely seen even in the great urban theatre/dance centers of the world.”
