Momix transports audiences from their everyday lives to a fantasy world through its trademark use of magical lighting and imagery. Lunar Sea is a procession of dreamlike sequences performed mostly in black light, with glowing phosphorescent shapes rather than identifiable human forms. Moses Pendleton, artistic director of Momix, stated that he was working "to devise a ballet as if you were witnessing it on the moon with one-sixth of the Earth’s gravity".
